In the eighth inning,
Gaston turned to left-handed reliever Jesse Carlson
with the Blue Jays clinging to a 4-3 lead.

Carlson's first task was to take on Yankees designated hitter Hideki Matsui,
and the pitcher nearly won the confrontation.

On a 2-2 pitch, Matsui's knees buckled on a sharp slider high in the strike zone,
but he held his swing and moved into a full count.

Matsui then drilled a 3-2 pitch -- another slider -- down the right-field line,
pulling it too far to the right of the fair pole for a towering foul ball that
crashed into the second deck.

Carlson opted to alter his approach, firing an 88-mph fastball toward Matsui,
who sent the ill-fated pitch well over the right-field wall for a game-tying homer.
